Where Can I Search For and Learn About My Genealogy?
At the recent Rootstech Family History Conference a new credo was emphasized: Discover, Gather, Connect. Much of our searching and learning can be done at familysearch.org. As I reflect on this new credo I remember a family trip in 2005; there was discovery, gathering and connecting going on continually.
For me the trip was the fulfillment of a life-long dream: To take my wife, my six children and their companions (two had not yet married) and my eight living grandchildren (three were under age 2) to see and experience many of the historic sites sacred to our church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) and our Ancestors. We added my wife’s cousin, Mary, to the group and after flying to Cleveland we picked up three, seven passenger vans, to carry us into six states on our way to visit ten different sites in just eight days. We assigned each of our children to familiarize themselves with one of the sites so they could teach the rest of us; so gathering information occurred first, along with discovering important connections. My lifetime had been spent gathering, discovering and connecting Ancestors to these sites as well and I had been privileged to visit all but two of the sites before, but never with family.
Our 2 One Year Olds
A remarkable Spirit attended us on our journey, there was no quarreling nor contention but rather a feeling of helpfulness prevailed. Our two youngest grandsons, each one year old, enjoyed picking up rocks and throwing them around at every stop along the way. Last night one of them visited with me, he did not remember any of our trip but he has heard of many of the connections. We went to familysearch.org (after finding his username and password) and I had him find his Great, Great, Great, Great Grandmother, Mary Field Garner. We went to her ‘Memories’ on her person page and he discovered that she lived to be 107 years old, she was just a girl of six when the Prophet Joseph Smith was killed and because she lived to be 107 she was the last living person to actually know Joseph, she was called the ‘Last Leaf’. A picture of her log home is also in her ‘Memories’ and that home stood next door to my Great, Great Grandmother’s home (Patty Bartlett Sessions). It is always fun to Discover, Gather and Connect.
So let’s go to work: Discover, Gather, Connect at familysearch.org. Who knows, maybe you will find how we are related.
